The Relationship Between Physical Well-Being and Mental Health

Health, as defined by the World Health Organization, is a condition of full physical, emotional and social well being and not just the absence of illness and infirmity. For instance, engaging in regular exercise is an excellent way to improve the quality of life, and physical activity releases endorphins, a feel-good chemical that creates a feeling of well being. The relationship between physical well-being and mental health is more complex than simply a case of the “more of the same” approach. Many researchers now think that the causes of mental illness may in part be related to a person’s genetic predisposition toward mental illness. However, one must take into account that even genetically-based predispositions cannot be avoided, as people are born into the world and they are destined to get sick or unhealthy every so often. Therefore, it may be impossible to completely eliminate mental illnesses as a result of genetics, but it is possible to control the extent of the negative effects.

Health in the United States has been getting worse for several decades, and many experts believe that it is because of the lack of a consistent definition of good health. Health care costs in the US have skyrocketed because health insurance companies are forced to pay a larger percentage of claims made by private doctors and have little bargaining power when it comes to negotiating with hospitals on medical treatments and services. The result has been that health insurance premiums have steadily increased and health insurance coverage has become almost impossible to obtain for millions of Americans. In addition, because drugs are more expensive and prescribed by doctors, many Americans have turned to cheaper over-the-counter remedies to treat common ailments. In this sense, health care in the developed countries is becoming a costly proposition for the developed world while the United States has provided relatively inexpensive care for its citizens for many years.
